BASILICA OF SANTA MARIA OF THE ESPERANZA

The Basilica of Santa Maria of the Esperanza Macarena, popularly known as the Basilica of La Macarena is a Catholic church located at number 1 of Becquer street in the neighborhood of La Macarena in Seville (Spain).
The building is the headquarters of the Brotherhood of La Esperanza Macarena, which season of penance in the early hours of Friday with images of Our Lady of Hope Macarena and Our Father Jesus of the Judgement, and obtained the dignity of Minor Basilica by a bull of November 12, 1966 issued by Pope Paul VI.

History:

Its construction began in 1941 when on April 13, Pedro Segura y Saenz, Archbishop of Seville, blessed the land on which was built and laid the foundation stone, and finished the year 1949, being consecrated on March 18 by the archbishop and acting as mentors Queipo de Llano and Serafina Salcedo, and consecrated by Cardinal José María Bueno Monreal, archbishop of the city, October 7, 1966. The work was carried out by the architect Aurelio Gómez Millán Seville, and this is a building with a single nave with chapels laterales.


Description.

The altarpiece is neo-baroque and houses the Virgen de la Esperanza Macarena, a stock image of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. It was made in 1949 by Juan Perez and Rafael Fernández Calvo del Toro, the imagery is from Cadiz and Luis Ortega Bru golden Antonio Sánchez. The set has a height of 12 m and is available in two bodies and attic houses allegories of the three theological virtues cristianas. The decoration of the chapel of the Virgin was carried out by López Morelló.

The first chapel on the Gospel side is for the worship of Our Lord Jesus of the Judgement, an image of clothing made by Philippe de Morales in 1654. The image is placed on an altar Calvo Pérez workshop held in 1951 and is a grant from the Ministry of Justice officials. It is inspired by the Baroque, and composed of a body with three blocks, dominating the central niche of the Lord. The imagery is also Ortega Bru, and side streets of San Gonzalo holding signs and St. Genevieve, and the whole is topped by a relief of the Virgin of Pilar, patroness of Hispanidad.

Altar de la Hispanidad:

The altar of Hispanic is the last altar of the temple, though not its timing, at the foot on the wall of the Epistle. He was blessed in 1959 by Cardinal Bueno Monreal. This altarpiece came from the Brotherhood to thank the South American people by the amount of donations that had been sent to the construction and embellishment of the Basilica. The design and implementation corresponded to shop Pérez Calvo. In the same paintings of the patrons have made all the Latin American artist Luis Encina Seville, with the exception of Our Lady of Altagracia, patroness of the Dominican Republic, which was made in ceramics by artist Enrique Orce.
He presides over the altar a painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe, patroness of Mexico, by the painter Joseph Mota in 1703 and donated to the Brotherhood by Father Feliciano Cortez, Grand Abbot of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico. The other pictures are: Our Lady of Coromoto, patroness of Venezuela, the Virgin of Caacupé, patron saint of Paraguay, Santa Rosa de Lima, patron saint of Peru, Our Lady of Divine Providence, Patroness of Puerto Rico, Our Lady of Luján Argentina's patron, the Virgen de Chiquinquirá, patroness of Colombia, Our Lady of Quinché, patron saint of Ecuador, Nuestra Señora del Carmen, patron saint of Chile and Our Lady of Altagracia, patroness of the Dominican Republic.
